The whole oil thing (spill) has gotten out of hand. This is like one of the things that get everyone saying this is the end of the world. The oil spill disaster will forever be here for all our kids and even grandkids. This oil is not only messing up our water but our food and essentially our lives. Why are people so greedy and not worrying about other people’s pains? Have we lost our sense of humanity? Bp has a lot of blame on them and I do not blame people for ding that because in fact it is their fault and greed that got us in this predicament.

Even before reading this poem I saw this on the news and I thought it was just plain crazy. You first ask someone to paint you a painting then after you tell them the boy in the painting is too dark lighten him up. They were of course not talking about his personality but his skin color. In this poem I felt that you hit it on the head it is just plain about racism. We of course do not choose our race just like the boy in the painting he didn't choose to be that shade of color but his creator did so why change him. Till this day there are still forms of racism that it even reared its ugly head in a painting. So we need to change as human being and know that we are just one people.

The "Arizona god dam!" is about how things was all good in Arizona then it went wrong. The people who are suppose to be the leaders are the ones doing the corruption. You talked a case where they wouldn’t let the individual have a say in the matter. Also there was a holiday where they wouldn’t let it become one “the Martin Luther king” which I really do not know why. The only reason I can see would be an issue of racism. Sure enough it seems like the way you wrote the poem you went through some racism in your life time.

Reflection #16

What I understand about intersexuality and transsexuality is that intersexuality is when a person has both female and male characteristics and transexuality is when a person has a physical sex that is different from their biological one. So basically, the person looks like a women but feels like a man. When reading information about these kind of information I feel that man I wonder what intersexual and transsexual are going through in certain societies where even homosexuals are not accepted. To know that you are biologically born a certain way you did not or do not have a choice to be born that way but you are. That has a big impact on me because a lot of times people are so quick to condemn someone because they believe that a person choose to be homosexual or choose to like the same sex, but in this case these people did not choose their gender or biologically choose who they are it just happen that way they were born that way. I have learned last semester about have an extra chromosomes that can alter a person’s characteristics but reading about it in depth is in fact just amazing. To know that people can be born a certain way other then the two ways I knew which were being “female” or “male”. The way I want to look at this is if I were born that way I wouldn’t want to be treated different because I am out of the norm of the population. A lot of the time we blame the parents or the friends and society for making someone gay or lesbian when in fact even that would not be true. But now when a person is born as an intersexual or transsexual who can you blame for that? No one the person is born like that end of story. Learning about this has truly helped me to be even more understanding about the way people are and their gender preferences. How can someone blame someone for being born a certain way? I think if even after reading something like this people are still resentful of the person I believe that person has a problem and needs to seek help. My eyes are truly open about the way things are and they way things can be in the world. Everyone is different point blank and if people have a hard time accepting that then we as a country need to do our jobs my giving everyone information to help them be informed about what they do not know or think they know.

What is the cause of homosexuality? I would not say I knew exactly the cause of homosexuality, but I believe it is that people are born that way. A lot of the time majority of the world look down on gays and really hate the concept of being homosexual. Why is it every time we come across something different from us or out of the “norm” we are reluctant to accept it? What is so horrible about a person not liking the same things we like or the same sex (male or female) we like? I just believe people are just so afraid of difference. But why? When you are born into a certain culture there are things that are hard to accept because we are taught not to accept same sex relationships (well in some culture). I used to be someone who had a hard time dealing with the fact that some of my friends were gay or people around me like the same sex. I’m raise in a culture where if you are a homosexual you are renounced by your parents and community. So when you are young you accept things as basically being “law” or the “rule”. Even people around you have that same mentality so you believe it as the truth. They even say things like “you are a girl act like one” girls are suppose to like boys and boys are suppose to like girls. When you get to a certain age and they see you a little close to the same sex they do not want you to be that close because you can turn gay. Another thing with the gender role, is that boys are to act “manly” like ballet would not be consider manly but girly so therefore by a guy being in ballet you would be look at as being homosexual; a lot of people do not see it as oh he just likes ballet but there is something odd about that boys do not go into that unless they are gay. The reality of the matter is most people think like that and even the ones that say they do not do. They catch their self guessing “he likes to cook he might be gay” because cooking is looked as a girly thing to do. In the society there are in fact gender roles whether we want it or not they are there they are put out by our families, friends, and the mass media. After my past experience with my homosexual friends I could care less if someone is gay because we are people no matter what my beliefs may be I know that they are just like you and me. Also in this class I learned things to show me that that it is our culture that a lot of times shape our way of thinking. If I were raised in a homosexual community and everyone around me were homosexual then I would see being gay as a normally thing for me. Then one day I met a heterosexual I would find that person to be weird out of the norm. So that is why people have a hard time accepting people that are gay because they are different from what they are used to.

When reading this article one thing that kept popping into my head was racism and favoritism. Why must one group be more important than the other? Is not this land of equality mean anything to the people who are suppose to be enforcing that law? Man! People in power abuse it so much and no one seems to care or do anything about it. Anyways, I truly believe that a case can be made and should be made for institutional racism. The law is the law right? So that means it should not mean be just for one group but for anyone and everyone. These types of things (racism) should not be happening now a day but yet it is. Why is it still going on? Why are the people in charge using the law to make it legal? The reason I believe this is still going on is because the people in charge are in the act as well. They are the puppets and the strings at the same time they make the law one way and execute it in another way. Just corruption everywhere you go. They are using the law to make it legal because they feel they are superior than another group and it is their responsibility that everyone that looks like them are ahead and everyone else is on the low totem pole. Race is something man made if man did not make it, it would be here at all. People choose to categorize each other into groups. Why? I guess to feel that we have the answers to questions and essentially knowing the way things work. If we look back in the medieval days when people did not have an understanding of thing they would make things up called “superstitions”. So it seems to me when we do not understand something we make up things or we must find ways to make our self understand it even though it may be mad. It is the same way we have racism because we do not understand why someone look different from us. So when we see someone who looks different from us I guess we freak out and think “well because they look unusual then I am better than them”. A lot of the time the law makers do not come out and say we’re giving the Cubans the whole ordeal and the Haitians do not have the right; but it is the way they implement the law that shows you straight out that they are racist towards the Haitians. They should have trials where these people who are in fact racist toward Haitians and towards any group should be trialed for their hatred. This world needs a serious wakeup call to just know we are all people and we are the same.

Why are the immigrants being punished for who they are? In Arizona they want to remove ethnic studies what exactly is the point of that? I think it's a matter of fear that maybe the Hispanics are going to take over. But why strip them of their native language? The reason basically would be that they would forget where they came from their native culture and eventually over generations their kids for getting their language. This poem is basically talking about the disastrous state of Haiti. In the poem it states that Haiti was once a beautiful and well off land. How did Haiti become the way it is? The government has a lot to do with the status of Haiti. The fact that they are not doing anything in these people times of trouble.A lot of the trees are gone they are cutting them down without any regulations and also not replanting them.They can come up with solution for the people why aren't they? But also the native people are some what responsible as well they can come together to make their home land more fruitful. Everyone wants power forgetting to look next to them and behind them for the people in need.

The word Race means “related by common descent or heredity. What is Racism? And does it really exist? I will answer these questions later, but going back to Race to me race does and does not exist. How is it that I believe there are two possible answers? I remember watching a movie in the class about how we all originated from Africa for the life of me I cannot seem to remember the name of it but I think it was “Mother Eve”. Okay, so that means Race as we know it does not exist nor should it. If all our ancestors came from Africa then why are some people known as Blacks, Whites, Haitians, Asians, and Hispanics etc…? Who came up with these stamps for us and why? The word Racism basically means the notion or idea that one’s own Race is superior and has the right to rule others. Wait a minute, with this definition I still come to believe that Race does not exist. Race is nothing but we having opinions about who we are who others are or who we are suppose to be or where we are suppose to belong. So why does Racism exist if Race does not? I believe the whole issue is when someone finds someone that does not look like them we are maybe afraid of the difference we see or envy that difference. The person responsible for racism would have to be us in general. We are people and we choose to be Racist we come up with this conception that I am better than you and because you do not look like me there is something wrong with you or you are just less than I am. Racism can be shown in many forms. One way would be through racial slur trying to degrade the person or race because we feel that they do not belong where we are. Back in the 1800’s there were segregation and slavery why because somebody decided well I am better than you so therefore you should belong to me and do what I say. In those days 95% of blacks were slaves. We have come a long way from slavery and Racism but is it completely gone? No, I can’t be so naive to think that the world has completely changed because that would be just the utter most lie ever. Racism exists in the workplace, in the home, in our schools, churches, our familiar groups, and with friends. The real question for me would have to be can Racism be eliminated? No, as sad or shocking as this might sound it is the blunt truth. As long as we are labeled as Blacks, Whites, Hispanics etc… on the Census or our children’s test then of course racism is here to stay and rein.

Assignment # 1

The school I decided to do my field work in was North Miami Beach Senior High School. I chose that school merely because it was the closet to my house. Moving on, the teacher that I had to spend time with was Mr. Witten he is a History teacher he teaches American History and Economics. The Grade level he teaches mostly consists of 11th graders and 12th graders. On the first day I was in his class I fell in love with the way he taught his students there was never a monotonous moment. He had a way of getting all his students involved and getting his point (the material) across to these young adults. One thing I notice is that just like I read in the “Teaching for Inclusion” he knew his entire students name. Also he cared about all his students the same well at least it appeared that way to me. He knew how much one needed attention than the other not giving more attention to one that did not really need it. You know something else his students never hesitate to ask him a question because he is like one of those teachers you can ask him anything. I have heard this saying a lot of the time “there is no such thing as a stupid question” I would beg to differ sometimes about that statement, but in his class you can tell the students never thought asking him a specific question was indeed stupid. Well in South Florida as we know there is diversity around every corner you turn. So of course in the class there were a lot of different background students. Different ideas, thought, beliefs, values etc… even though the teacher is a white American he was so to speak down with all his students he seem to understand that each student was in fact different (unique) and came from different places and status and cultures. This teacher was indeed a teacher who loves to laugh and make his students laugh as well. So sometimes he would joke with them on their culture and belief not to offend them but to make them feel that it was okay to be who they are and just know that everyone is different in a way and that it is acceptable. Another thing I found rewarding to the students was sometimes Mr. Witten would have them do group assignments. I saw this to be a helpful way to get the students to bond with each other also so they could get a better understanding of the material at hand and another thing I pick up from that method is that the students learned from each other. Seeing the student’s work together trying to figure out essential what the work they were supposed to be learning was a treat in itself. These are the type of teachers we need in Florida and all over the world.

Genocide is systematic killing of a racial or cultural group. Once again I would have to go inside of these peoples head to see what is clicking or not clicking rather. Some questions I would like to ask myself as I’m writing this essay, how can someone just decide to kill off a group? Why would someone do it? And is anyone capable of genocide...To decide to kill a group or a person I would have to say that maybe it is because that person is a threat to me or I feel I am better than them. In retrospect to the Emmett Till the Anglo Saxons thought that the black man was a threat to them. They thought that the African Americans would take over and take their wives. They saw that the population of African Americans were increasing and so they being superior (having too much power), thought it was alright to treat blacks as inferior people. Well you might now say what this has anything to do with genocide? Everything, I think that the death of one boy Till was a wakeup call for blacks not to go through genocide like the Jews went through. The same could have happen to blacks; we could have gone through one too. I believe genocide does not care who you are all it takes is for one group to hate another and it can happen to any race or cultural group. Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur all basically did the same thing the kill because oh you look different than I do, or because you were not of the same background as them. The things they would do to these people were inhuman phenomenon. Burning people alive and shooting them in a straight line naked. They humiliated the people, by cutting their hair, not feeding them properly so that they would die anyways. They would also rape the people how can people be so cruel to do such a thing? How can people be so heartless with their own kind? To know how another human feel the same pain you go through they are going through. Who do they think they were to choose who lives and who dies. No one has the right (in my opinion) to kill anyone no matter who you are. Who do these people think they were? I guess I could even go as far to say they were a god. Seriously, thinking about all the stuff I have learned about genocide if anyone decides to do something like this truly the world will end (as some people believe). Just to think because I think I am better than you I will kill you to feel what? Things are B.S to me. How can we become that tomorrow if we kill off our today?

Reflection #11

The Holocaust was just a total tragedy and hatred showed to a certain group or people. The Jews were under attack at night so to speak. This by far was one of the worst kinds of genocide in history. To think people would essentially kill their open because of the mere fact they thought they we threaten. When I watch the movies and hear the stories of victims it just gets me so mad that people could even think of a despicable thing to do not even taking the time out to think what if it was me what if I was the Jew they were out to annihilate maybe this Holocaust would not happen to begin with. The word Holocaust means “being sacrifice by fire” (Greek word). Even though Jew were the large target for the Nazi regime that wasn’t their only target; there were the gays, handicap, Roma (Gypsies), Slavic people, communists, Socialists, Jehovah’s Witnesses etc… Just being different from them was killed and if you went against their ideology. The Germans believed that they were the big dogs and everyone else was the inferior little dogs. I believe in those malicious German minds were just total extinction of all Jews. Even when I look at the movies and the victims that came and spoke to us it still feel like it’s a nightmare where I can just wake up from. But when in fact I stop and guess what it is still there the pain and sufferings that the Jews had to go through and endure. To see them humiliate the Jews okay take out Jews degrading human beings in that fashion scares me thinking what the hell goes through people mind when they think they are the “better choice” “the best race or kind”. How can a group of people get that far to want to kill someone because they were born a certain way. That’s like saying let us kill all the girls because they do not look like males. This shows that the Nazi had no consciousness no type of heart at all. Everyone is different so to say “we going to kill that group” then another group can say the same thing for my group let us kill them (my group) because we are different from them. If everyone thought like that everyone would be killing each other for no reason at all. Oh you have brown eyes you do not belong here; you have blue eyes you do not belong here. Man, we need to wake up as people to realize there is no perfect person or race what so ever. Also wake up so something like this never happens again to any group of people ever again. A lot of people deny the Holocaust because they feel something like that could never happen in this world. Or looking at it in some Germans point of view, we Germans would never do such a thing. A lot of people do not want to admit it happen in their back yard so the deny it ever happening to begin with. The fact is it happened we learn from it so we don’t repeat history.

Reflection #10

The word prejudice means to “pre-Judge”. To Judge someone prior to knowing anything about them. Prejudice is our awareness that other people in the world are not like us, do not look like us, or think like we do. So we form a group that looks like us or resemble who are. Are we born prejudice? The answer to that question is quite simple “No” we are not born prejudice human beings. If in fact we are not born prejudging others how did this come about? Well we born into families, cultures, groups etc… that make up the prejudice we have. Why do we prejudge someone or group? The reasons are many one reason could be that it answers all our unanswered questions. Another could be that it may make us feel that we are superior then another or inferior. Example of prejudging a group something that my people (Haitians) do at times is say that all Native Haitian know how to do math. That is also a stereotype to me and in fact I see prejudging and stereotype go “hand in hand” in this situation. I tend to prejudge people all the time. When I first saw you I judge you on your appearance I thought you were an African. I may be right in that situation but the fact of the matter is we sometimes judge at our first glance at an individual. I believe we all are prejudice to some degree. No one can say that they are not because before we know the person or even met the person we have assume the way that they are without giving them an opportunity to let them say who they are. Before I register for a course I always tend to check on ratemyprofessors.com to see what prior students had to say about the course and also the professor. When I check your ratings people said you gave a lot of work. When that may be true in theory they left out that you care about your student s success. So first day of class I walk in and in my head when listening to the entire task I had to do in six weeks I thought I was going to die. But come to figure out that if you stay on top of your things you should be fine. Getting back on track, we prejudge whether we want to or not sometime time. I believe it comes to be a problem when we let hurt others around us, when we exclude others because they do not look, talk, believe, and act like we do. The truth of the matter is we are born into different cultures that at many times tell us who to like, who to trust, who to associate or “hang with” for lack of a better words. We need to step out of that group at times and look from the outside in to truly get to know every human being we encounter. Even then we cannot base one encounter on a group of people we have not even said “Hello” to.

Emmett till was not the first to go through such cruelty and racism. But his death was what sparked or shown the reality of racism that went on back in those days to the world. To be different or of color in those days were not a good thing. You were basically was an animal to majority of Anglo Saxons. Separate schools, water fountain, bathroom, seats, cups etc…was to me a symbol of “superiority” “fear” the Saxons thought they were better than black people. At that time the world was a totally weird place it seems to me. Where we (black and whites) couldn’t function together as one. We have come a mighty long way from those time but we still have some coming with Arizona and places up North. One day we will be one. But until then we need to try to be.

Well the reason I believe that Freud’s Theory on personality is so important is because of a sense of truth in it. He said humans are driven by two things sex and aggression. Sex representing reproduction essentially a means of survival for the human and for animals. So Freud’s saw sex I guess not only for pleasurable needs but an important aspect for the survival of mankind. The second one which is aggression has to do with us being able to protect ourselves from any hard that comes our way. Now, of course when you look at it that way he does not seem to be a crazy man. A lot of people do not like him or his work but I really do not see something wrong with it. But sex and aggression are not the two things that defy the human race. Maybe for rare amount of people it is the case but for humans as a whole it does not. The thing that I can’t understand is where one man can come up with such a theory. Moving on, the Id basically is the need to be pleased. The Id does not care for anyone else but itself (pleasure principle) if I need something I do not care how you do or what has to be done you better to what I want. That is essentially to me how the Id works. Now, if everyone was forever stuck in that stage then now one would care enough to even ask how someone was doing. Let alone notice if someone is in need of assistance. Looking at this, teachers cannot act in this matter because it is not about them but about the students. Okay the Ego, in this stage there is consciousness no longer being a selfish brat so to speak but realizing that others are as important as we are. I guess now I can say that this part teachers’ have in them to meet the needs of their students. When we realize that we are the center of the universe then we can begin to make a change in others lives as well as our own. Super ego, to me is total consciousness we have a sense of self control because we are aware of consequences. I think Freud is right in these three stages that the human being goes through. I do not agree with the fact that we are belligerent that sex and aggression is the two things that drives us. Well like you said in class we must learn to look past the bad to see the good.

What strikes me the most about the Beliefs, Values and Attitudes is that we teachers have them and our students do as well. Let’s see a lot of the time we try to force or push our beliefs on others. It is essential as teachers we do not do that. We must teach them to think for themselves and not let others think for t hem. Values, what is we value in life may not be what the students value. Attitude is something people would say “do not give me that attitude boy/girl” then what attitudes are we suppose to be showing. Positive attitudes are a start as teachers we need to set the mood in the class so to speak. We need to let the students know what acceptable and unacceptable attitudes in our learning environment are. This something I believe should be implemented the first day of school. A student having an attitude issue is a big thing in a class I believe. Especially if that kind of acting out is not dealt with in the beginning. Also as teachers are attitudes reflection on who we are and how our class will be and can be. If one day a teacher comes in and shows he/or does not want to be here then we cannot expect our students to want to be in the classroom as well. If we are the leaders we need to conduct ourselves in a manner where the children can look up to us. Okay I not saying that every day is “peaches and cream” yes just like everyone else teachers have bad days. As professionals we must leave all the bad things at our house and try never to bring it the classroom or take it out on a student. From personally experience my dad is someone if something bad happen at work well the whole house will know that as soon as he steps foot in the door. I believe what happen in our homes should stay there. Also as teachers we need to be consistent in things we do. Our rules in the classroom cannot be wishy-washy. We have to put our rules and regulations into play every day. Because the students will notice when you as the head of the class slacks off. Student’s putting other students down is unacceptable like it talked about in the inclusive teaching; the classroom needs to be a place where all students feel comfortable in. Respect should also be a huge thing in the classroom. Teachers need to have respect for their students and the students vice versa. Those are just a few things that can make the class room a safe cloud nine for them when the values, beliefs, attitudes etc… are all implemented then truly our students and our teachers can start learning from each other.

Teaching for Inclusive is by far my favorite reading that I had so far for this class. I know that the others had essential point to the course and to us as a human being; but, I feel that this reading hit teaching on the head. If we go back to the reading in transformation I can see that everyone is different and our students are as well. As educators we need to know how to deal with every student to the way they are their understanding, self-esteem, how fast they are etc…In this reading it also talked about how we need to teach to each individual. This means the teachers need to pay attention to each student. Each student is different as I mention before and we as teacher need to get to know who our students are. Some students are outspoken, others are quiet, some are unsure of themselves etc… But as teachers we need to create an environment that helps the student feel that they truly belong. Also so the student can feel that they can express themselves without a judgmental comment or stare. Teachers have to be informed about all their students before they walk in the classroom the day first day. Also I like the idea that all the students introduce their selves in the first couple of days so everyone may know each other. I came across teachers where they spent the whole semester and they never bother to learn the students’ names. Then it talked about how even though we need to focus as teachers on students individually but as a group. Teachers need to create an atmosphere where all students feel okay. They need to have what is called group learning. Helping the students learn as a group is also constructive to help them know even though they are diverse they are in fact the same. How? A start would be that the students are all human second everyone (our ancestors) originated from Africa. No one student is better than the other student teachers must watch our selves so we do not favor one student over the next one. Everyone needs to be treated the same no special treatment; that would cause some students to believe you are unfair. The whole idea of this article is to efficiently help teachers understand their students and ways to help their students learn well in a safe diverse environment.

The Birds are endangered. They were once so free living their lives peacefully. The question in poem is that is it nature who is killing them off or is it the human race. Now this part right here "the same who
would destroy itself to feed its young -- to

nest to incubate & protect them." Okay this is profound the pelican were once living so well that they wanted their children to have the same life they did. But now that they are being destroyed by man and oil leakage they are killing their unborn so that they don't go though the same pain they went though essential protecting them. Then we humans realize this but it is too late the damage is done already. What can we do?

In these three reading I read things that I could truly say was out of my norm. In the Sitting Quietly I saw a sense of coming from one stage to the other. Basically in that story the little boys had to go through test, or obstacles to become a man. The elders had to see if truly they were ready for the responsibilities of becoming a man being able to take care of their family through those trials. In this story it showed that even when they were a little boy their parents had this plan for them to go through these things. Now when thinking back at this it shows that the family had a rite of passage planed for Kona and Zena even before they were able to talk. I read a part in the story where Kona ran after his father (Flumo) to beg him so that he could go with them. And his dad picked him up and hit him then sent him back. At that moment and time Kona could have not understood what his father did but his father was trying to protect him from something he was not ready for. Being able to endure the test that was put out for them was the true way or meaning to show they were ready to shirt to change from being a boy to becoming a man. Now in the Sambia story was to me the strangest type of ritual or custom I have ever heard of in my life. When looking at the “Sitting Quietly” and “The Sambia” they have a similarity in them with rite of passage they had to meet with their destiny. It was their fate to transform to move from one level to the next. Okay now going on to the Sambia I know that is it their custom to take the younger boys and to make them become warriors so that they could fight and protect their village. In their rituals it was something that the boys had to do if not they were beat them up. For me I can read this or look at this and say man this is wrong, but it is their customs the little boys did not choose to be raised by the men but they had no choice they were born into the family and culture. It is the same way I was raise a certain way and I have rites of passage that for them can be absurd. It is all how you look at it looking through their glasses or am I looking through my glasses at them. So a lot of the time we cannot be quick to say that “oh that’s wrong” because when we do that is shows that we are only looking through our optical and not taking the time to ask them for theirs to see what they see.

Stormy Weather

In this poem it seems like you were in love with her. At first as a young boy at the age of 12 years old you say as maybe just being the most beautiful women on earth. But as you matured you saw still as a beautiful lady but with a twist she was someone who good at what she did. Lena Horne was a singer great at what she did. Ser also was an actress she didn't only have a "body" any more but she embodied who she was in the film Cabin in the sky. She knew exactly who she was she over the sigma that came with being black but embraced herself for who she was and what she had. I would say you venerate her because of the presence she brought to the stage. Lena Horne was a god in sense to you back when you were a little boy. You had and still do have respect for her. Even though I didn't know who she was I can tell that she will truly be missed.

Well when I hard this poem I could tell that you are in the favor of the Arizonans. The first three lines basically are says who has the right to say where we can live "man" or a higher being. How that is human have the right to say where we should and should not do. As if now "man" is now a god telling and choosing where we must belong. The Arizona law Sb 1070 that is put in place for Arizonans is to me an unlawful thing to do because the immigrants are the one doing the lower jobs those others in the United States would do their selves. How can they just look at you and say you don't belong here to me I see it as being racist. Again in this poem you show that it is the people that are basically telling the immigrants how to live their lives.

Wow, is the first thing that comes to mind when I read this short article. Who would have thought it would such of a hassle to acquire education because of your skin color. Yes, I have heard of blacks could not drink out of the same water fountain as whites or blacks could not sit in the front of the bus. Which reminds me of the incidence of Rosa parks when she was really tired come from work and she decided to sit in the front of the bus and a white person came on the bus and the rule is Rosa (a black) gets up her seat for that white person and heads to the back of the bus. So the story says she did not want to oblige with the rules so she was arrested. Now, back to the "Little Rock Nine" I for one would not like to be part of the little rock nine for the mere reason that what they went through being kicked out of school for just because of something so simple as skin color. But if I was part of it would have been a discouragement to want to go back to school if not a total discouragement. Since 1957 the integrations was suppose to take place but yet the school rejected 27 students tried to get into little rock all were turned down. Why were the children turned down? Was it because of low test scores? Or maybe because of misconduct in previous schools? No, Just on their appearance goes to show that even before you get a chance to open your mouth to say something words have been spoken for you. At that time the school did not have what we call intercultural competence. The only culture that was accepted by Little Rock high school and the members of that neighborhood was the U.S "white culture". Which meant if you were a different race other than their own you were wrong or you did not belong there in the school? The nine children needed to be guided by armed guards. I for one would have tried going to a different school instead of having to go through this. I would even go as far as saying that they did not have the opportunity to go to another school maybe because of transportation. That school was the only schools near them so therefore being their primary choose of choosing. How would you have reacted to the shouts and slurs of those on the streets who didn't want to see you in that building; the way I would react is I would just "keep it moving" just ignore what they say try to get the education I was looking for. In the reading it talked about this one girl out of the nine that got frustrated at how they were treating her and throw a bowl of chili at the tormentors. Well that sounds like something I would end up doing if the people still annoyed me. Not saying that what she did was the proper way to handle the situation but we are humans and things get to us and we react. Acceptance was a great issue for a lot of people not wanting to accept something or someone other than the "norm". The tormentors had preconceived notion of black people that is why it was hard for them to accept the black children in their schools. Also their point of view was shape by the person who raised them to be racist. Intergrading was a great thing that took place and hopefully one day the whole world can truly be intergraded inside and out.

A lot was said about culture one was that culture is not something that we were born with but something we learn. Culture to is the language, the Values, beliefs, standards, the way we are guided, it forms our behavior etc...Whether we realize it or not culture is a huge part of our lives. Culture makes us who we are today. It is not something that we choose if we want it or not, is given to us. It is past down maybe by our moms, dads, guardian, aunt, uncle, sister, brother, cousin and so on. Even sometimes in the way people try to explain their ways of doing something culture happens to rare its head in the mist of the situation. For example: "Well, in my culture that is not the way we do things or the girls are suppose to "act like a lady" While we are on the point of "act like a lady"; what does that mean exactly? Who says that this is how ladies should act? Some examples of acting like a lady: ladies are not suppose to be a loud mouth, they are suppose to know how to cook, Ladies do not just drop their self on a chair. I could go on and on about this but this goes to show that there is a stamp on gender and that people are raise knowing this is the way things are supposed to be. Society says the way girls and boys are supposed to be. The media, that we see on T.V also shape are way of thinking and accepting things to be the norm of society and the norm of which we individual s are suppose to live. What it means is that the human race no matter where you are from, have a conception of the way things are suppose to be or that it is the right things to do. That is what culture does to us it shapes our way of thinking and doing. It gives us restrictions in a way. Most of the time there is only a few ways of viewing everything in life because of those restrictions that we were raised with. Those restrictions whether we think or know they exist in us we have it to an extent. It is what makes who we are as a person; I could even say culture equals human beings. Culture is also experienced; you are raised a certain way so therefore you have been through it. Matthew Arnold, Lewis Henry Morgan, Herbert Spencer, John H. Bodley all had their say or ideas on culture. Even though they may have a little difference in their definition on culture they still have a lot in similarity. Intercultural competence. When I first saw these two words the first "intercultural" I understood. Competence next to intercultural kind of confused me in sense. The word competence on Dictionary.com means "the quality of being competent; adequacy; possession of required skill, knowledge, qualification, or capacity. Capacity for me means capable of, having the abilities able to withstand. So intercultural competence to me being able to or having the capability to know how to belong or be like different culture; also know how to incorporate other cultures into your own. Being able to understand another culture is a great thing; because now you are able to understand where that other person is coming from and why they are the way that they are. You are capable of relating to the person and know that just as you have beliefs, standards, ideas etc...They have their own and it is okay because not every culture is the same. Communication is also important in culture knowing another language is a plus. In Miami we can see that it is an advantage for getting a job or getting ahead in that job. But communication is not easy of course; the reason being is that you can say one thing and the person listening may hear something different. Example: Let’s look at this idiom, "it's raining cats and dogs" I know that this means that it is raining very hard outside or it is pouring rain; but to some one that is not raised in the United States may not be familiar with that phase. They might think that it mean there are actually animals falling from the sky. Non-verbal communication, we say something even when we did not say anything, How? Well by our body language. By a smile it is understood around the world; eye contact is a big for us in the U.S because it show that you are paying attention and a sign of respect for some of us. Culture and intercultural competence are what makes or breaks us as human beings.

In the transformation Frameworks, Paradigms and Paradigm Shifts I for one see that though experience we have preconceived notions on practically everything. What is paradigm? Paradigms are not something we are born with it is not genetically rooted within us. Paradigms are in fact our point of views our standpoint it is something that is experienced. When it states that paradigms are experienced so without us personally going through it or firsthand seeing it happened in front of us we have not experience a paradigm. Certain things that we do or go through can alter our way of thinking. For example: I am walking through a park at night and I get bitten by a snake now because of that encounter I now believe that walking through the park at night will cause me to be bitten by a snake or any other animal. Now, that experience you can say taught me something never to visit the park at night. Also that every time I go to the park, I will get bitten by a snake. Even though it may not be a true statement but because of that one experience change the way I see the park at night time. What is a paradigm shift? Well I would not really say that it is a complete change in the way we see things but, a paradigm shift for me would have to be a change in the way we think but not fully. So, when we experience a paradigm shirt it alters our way of life some times. It is hard to change a way a person thinks about an idea and if it can be done is a question in itself. When we are born we are born into all different types of families, culture, race, creed, and beliefs. To change, to alter, a person’s way of thinking may be an impossible task. Know that first we cannot change someone. Second, that everyone is diverse and is born into various types of families; everyone thinks differently. We used the example in class so I think it is a good one to use on this paper, religion. Religion is something that we either have or do not have. But those of us that believe in God believe that he exists. Okay so I maybe a catholic and someone else could be a Baptist but I believe they are in the wrong religion because I was raised and thought that that was the best religion to be in. So, let’s say I do not accept what a Baptist say because I believe it is wrong. Why do I deem it is wrong? The reason is quite clear I was inform at a young age that any other religion other then my own is wrong okay so to try to get someone like me accept the point of view of a Baptist would be a hard thing to do if not in fact impossible. I do not have to change my religion but I can take the time to listen to a Baptist and accept that they choose to be a Baptist and it is okay. Have I myself experience a paradigm shift? Yes, the reason being is that I am not a little kid anymore so I have evolved from that stage. Also my way of thinking has change when I was little everything used to be about me and no one else, I remember Piaget mention in his stages of development when we are in a certain age we are all about me. So when we are reluctant to accept that everyone has the right to believe whatever they what to we are still thing like a child and have not gone through a paradigm shift in that manner. I still have a lot of work to do with learning to accept certain things but I have learned to accept the person for who they are. Why is it important for teachers to experience paradigm change? The reason is easy because their students are always changing and for the teachers to have one way of teaching them not all students will understand. Also the world is always changing so when they have just one belief they are not able to adapt to survive in the classroom. So it is very important for all teachers to experience a paradigm change or they will be left behind in the classroom instead of the students.

The word transformation means to me a complete change from one thing to the other. In transformation the beginning I really found that being aware that everyone is different and has different thought process or ideas help us in transformation. Many of the time we tend to be self absorbed everything is about us. We may never take the time to think about others; to know that every human being thinks diversely then we do. So when we counter someone that thinks differently than we do we automatically think that person is wrong. For example: If I were to say eating pork is disgusting and I have a friend and he or she eats pork so because he or she eats pork there something wrong with that person. Now by me just saying that that shows that I am only looking on my side of the fence. Not thinking twice to consider that person’s views at this point I can say there is not a state of consciousness. But we must know that not everyone is the same even in appearance we are diverse (not counting identical twins). One of the questions I remembered we discussed in class was do we really have interpersonal and intercultural skills? Well for me I can say I do because I am aware of the diversity around me and I am not afraid of accepting it. I know how to embrace and accept the individual just as they are. One thing is for sure we can not force our beliefs on other people or change people. We must change ourselves in a way to learn to accept others with their view and beliefs. Knowing how to do that (accept) is a totally different story. Now looking at Transformation creating context part one, what does it mean to reinvent ourselves? To me it means first knowing who we are then making ourselves a better person. What makes me what I am and how do I better myself. Looking at my selves I can just say that I great the way I am there is nothing I need to change; but, then that show first off there is really no state of consciousness. It may show that I have self-esteem (a little too much) but, I am basically saying there is no room for improvement. In that same manner when I look at a person and I do not accept their view point it shows I am not leaving any place or space for their idea which they have a right to. Being quick to judge a person shows that we have much to learn. I really that judging people is a natural thing for humans to do in general. But when we take the time to realize that we are doing it then we are conscious of our thoughts. They have a saying don’t judge a book by its cover I believe that is a true statement that we say but half the time to stick with us. When we learn to accept people with their ideas, their beliefs etc.…that is when I believe there is a true transformation.

When reading this article I have learned a couple of things one of which is that humans been the first creatures to walk up the proper way and that we also all originated from Africa. One of the things I found to be very interesting is that how there were a lot of disputes about when humans really had control of fire, are they the first to discover fire, and was it being used by them. Also there were different dates on how far back the usage of fire began with Homo erectus. Some believe that humans using fire went all the back to 300,000 years ago. One thing that made sense to me was when in the article where it talked about how could there be drawings in cave if man did not have fire to see what they were doing. When reading about the usage that humans found for fire showed that humans are intelligent being. Other creatures are not as intelligent as humans. Humans are very complex to begin with so of course every archaeologist would not agree with the dating on when fire was truly controlled by Homo erectus. One of the ways that we could have probably knew that Homo erectus controlled fire was by foraging to fend for themselves. In the article for me showed that there is also relativity between humans and apes (chimpanzees). So humans derived from Africa evolve from apes perhaps? Now, Moving on to the invention of the wheel I to tell you the truth did not know where the wheel derived from. But now I know it is from Mesopotamia. The wheel is something that is very essential without the wheel we as humans would not be able to function as well as we do today. Having things like with cars, bus, metro rail etc…helps our lives become much easier and more efficient. One thing that caught my attention on this article would have to be the person responsible for creating the first wheel was. I do not believe it mention that on there or maybe because no one knows who came up with it to begin with. But my question is why is it that no one knows who created the first wheel. I am euphoric that someone invented the wheel though because without it I would have to walk to all my destinations instead of taking the bus, or plane, car etc… On the history of writing my opinions on that matter, was a way for people to express their selves. It also for me would be a way that people told stories. It even talked about how people would use certain wring to show that a land was rightfully theirs. Humans starting out with symbols (pictures) and then with sounds then eventually words. For me humans used writing as a way to survive in a sense and for a past time. As a pre-teaching intern I would think the reason I am asked to read this material would have to be for me to learn. Also to know where I originated from to know my past to know how I as a human being got to be who I am today. Basically I believe the transitions to how humans have evolved to who we are today. Maybe by reading these articles I can now know that everyone got to be who they are by knowing their past.

Hello, my name is Inathaelle Pigne. I was born in Haiti port au prince. But I was raised here in Miami Florida. I have been living here for 15 years basically all my life. I am one of four siblings. My older brother is 21 his name is Dimitry. I am the second child I am 20 years old I also have a younger brother named David and my last sibling who is my sister Estelle she is 12 years old. I am a secondary education-Biology major. I am in my second year in college I am currently taking five classes in the summer. I will be graduating in the fall with an AA degree; then I will transfer to Florida International University where I will continue my degree in secondary education Biology. I always wanted to become a teacher I believe it's because of the difference I can make in an individual life. I first realized that I wanted to become a teacher when a peer of mine would always ask me for help on math question which I believe I was not really good in math. But the fact I did understand the material at hand. So my peer would always be afraid to ask the teacher for questions because she was shy in that matter. There was this one day where I helped her and she said you really need to become a teacher because the way you explain it the teacher we have now makes it so difficult to understand. That is when she really assured me that being a teacher was what I wanted to do for a living. I have thought about what other careers that could probably make me more money. But, I found that the other careers would not make me very happy. I enjoy helping others so I know that becoming a teacher one day will be very satisfying. I have even gotten discouragements from others saying that I should do something that will make me money and that I would not have to deal with children that will give me a headache. I know it will be hard work to work with all kinds of different students but I know that at the end of the day I will be please if I just helped one student. I also do know it takes a good teacher to help a student to become someone tomorrow. I want to be that teacher that places a stamp on the student’s life; knowing that I made a difference in an individual’s life is a reward in itself.
